What Instagram DM automation really costs in a year, and how to work it out
The monthly price on a pricing page is the least useful number on it. What you pay over a year depends on what the tool counts, what happens when your account grows, and whether you can change plans without paying twice. This guide walks through each, with a worked example you can copy for your own numbers.
Estimate a year's cost from your busiest month, not your average one, and check two things before paying: what the tool counts (contacts or DMs) and what an upgrade in the middle of a month costs.
The three ways DM tools bill
| Model | What you pay for | What a viral post does to the bill |
|---|---|---|
| Per contact | Everyone who has interacted with you, or everyone active in the month | Raises it, often into a higher tier, and the new contacts stay counted |
| Per DM | A monthly allowance of messages sent | Uses up the allowance faster; you add a pack or move up a plan |
| Flat with caps | A fixed price, with limits on accounts or features | Nothing, until you hit a cap that stops automations |
Per-contact pricing is the one to watch. The thing it charges for, people engaging with you, is the thing you are trying to grow, so a good month can move you into a higher price permanently. Per-DM pricing grows more gently: a busy month costs more messages, and the next month starts again.
Working out a year, step by step
- Find your busiest month for comments in the last year, from Instagram's insights. Use that, not the average, because automation has to cope with your best post.
- Multiply comments by the number of messages each person gets. A DM plus one follow-up is two.
- Add DMs from story replies and keyword replies in your inbox if you plan to automate those too.
- Pick the plan that covers that month with some room, then multiply its monthly price by 12.
- Compare that with the yearly price, if the tool offers one.
Monthly or yearly?
A yearly plan is a discount for committing. It makes sense when you already know the tool works for you and your volume is steady. It makes less sense in your first month, when you are still finding out whether comment-to-DM suits your audience.
- Pay monthly while you test, or while your volume changes a lot from month to month.
- Pay yearly once a plan has covered you for two or three months in a row.
- Check that a yearly plan still refreshes your allowance every month. On a per-DM plan, a year should mean twelve monthly allowances, not one big pot that runs out in March.
On HookSend, every paid plan can be bought for 12 months at once for 30% less than twelve monthly payments: Business is $209 a year instead of $25 a month, which works out at about $17.42 a month. DMs and AI credits refresh every month of the year, and nothing renews by itself.
The cost nobody lists: changing plans
Sooner or later a post does better than expected and you need a bigger plan halfway through a month. Tools handle this very differently. Some charge the full price of the new plan from today and throw away what is left of the old one, so you pay for the same days twice. Others credit the unused part.
The fair version is the one you get from most modern software: you pay only the difference between the two plans for the time you have left, and your renewal date stays the same. On HookSend, moving from Pro to Business with half a month left costs half of the monthly difference between them, not a new month. The same applies on yearly plans, and moving from monthly to yearly takes the unused part of your month off the yearly price.
Before you pay, find out what an upgrade costs mid-month. If the answer is "the full price of the new plan", a single viral post can cost you a month twice.
Other costs to add
- Extra accounts. If you run a second brand or manage clients, check the per-account price or the plan that includes them.
- AI replies. Tools that answer DMs with AI usually meter it separately, in credits or messages.
- Taxes and card fees. Card prices outside your own country may have sales tax or VAT added at checkout.
- Refunds. Read the refund window before paying for a year. HookSend's is 48 hours, on purchases that have not been used.
Questions people ask about this
- How much does Instagram DM automation cost per year?
- It depends on how the tool bills and how many people message you. Work it out from your busiest month: count the DMs you would send, pick the plan that covers them, and multiply the monthly price by 12, or use the yearly price if there is one.
- Is a yearly plan cheaper than paying monthly?
- Usually. HookSend's yearly plans cost 30% less than twelve monthly payments, and the DM and AI credit allowances still refresh every month.
- What happens if I upgrade in the middle of a month?
- On HookSend you pay only the difference between the two plans for the time left, and your plan's end date does not change. Moving from monthly to yearly takes your unused monthly time off the yearly price.
- Do HookSend plans renew automatically?
- No. Each payment covers one month, or twelve on a yearly plan, and nothing is charged again unless you pay again.
