Is Instagram DM automation free?

The distinction worth holding on to is between a free plan and a free trial, because vendors in this category use the word for both. A free plan has no end date and a smaller feature set; a free trial has every feature and a countdown. Which Instagram DM tools have a free tier?
2 of the 4 we checked published one we could verify on 30 September 2026: ReplyRush at 1,500 DMs a month and LinkDM at 1,000 DMs a month, both on one Instagram account. HookSend's own Free plan is 2,500 DMs a month on 1 Instagram account.
2 published nothing we could establish. InstantDM's pricing page showed a 7-day free trial rather than a free plan, with a single unexplained mention of "500 credits a month" beside its testimonials. Every ManyChat pricing and help page we requested refused our fetch with a 403, so this page states nothing about ManyChat's free tier at all. LinkDM's free tier is wider than ours on features — their own page lists story and Facebook automations on it, which HookSend's Free plan does not include — and ReplyRush's allowance is larger than ours. What is not free?
On HookSend, 8 features. The Free plan does not include any of these: follow gate, product carousels in DMs, lead capture, follow-up sequences, AI copy assistant, build a campaign from an Instagram link, knowledge bases for AI DM answers, or DM flows with buttons and questions. On HookSend a free tier covers the send and charges for everything wrapped around it. A DM that only goes to people who follow you, a DM that collects an email address, a DM that chases up two days later, a DM that answers whatever the person types back from your own price list — each is a paid feature rather than a free one. Where other vendors draw that line is their own business and varies: LinkDM's free tier verifiably includes story automations, which ours does not.
What is the catch with a free Instagram DM tool?
Three catches, and all three showed up on every free tier we verified. A free tier caps volume, caps you at one Instagram account, and keeps the vendor's branding on your messages. On HookSend the caps are 2,500 DMs a month, 1 account and 3 active campaigns, and the branding stays on every plan including Agency.
Free tiers exist because they sell paid ones, and pretending otherwise is not a good look on a vendor's own page. What makes a free tier honest rather than a trap is whether it stops working: HookSend's Free plan is written into the billing code as the floor every workspace falls to, so a paid month ending is a downgrade rather than a shutdown. Neither LinkDM's nor ReplyRush's pricing page said whether their free tier expires when we read it on 30 September 2026, so this page does not claim either way for them.
What does a free plan not exempt you from?
Meta's own rules, which apply on every plan and in every tool. Meta requires a professional Instagram account, allows exactly one private reply per comment, accepts that reply for up to seven days after the comment, and measures a 24-hour messaging window from the person's last message to you.
None of those four is something a paid plan removes or a different vendor can negotiate, and a tool advertising its way around any of them is worth walking away from. Meta also documents 750 private replies an hour per professional account for comments on posts and reels, which a post that does well will pass; a well-built tool queues the overflow across the hour rather than dropping it, and Meta's seven-day window is what lets the backlog clear. These are Meta's limits, stated as Meta's, on a page that is otherwise about ours.
Is a free Instagram DM tool safe for my account?
