Are Instagram MCP servers read-only?
No, and the belief deserves correcting because it is repeated everywhere. Of the 6 Instagram MCP servers we read on their own pages on 30 September 2026, four published Instagram write tools. Windsor.ai lists nine, including creating posts and stories, commenting, replying to comments and hiding, unhiding and deleting them. Composio lists a direct-message send.
Only Porter Metrics states read-only, and the statement is narrower than it sounds: their Instagram connector page says Porter requests no write scopes from Instagram and names six read methods, while their own MCP help centre lists twenty-eight tools on the same server including additive-write and destructive ones, and one that runs a catalogue of more than 750 operations that is not published anywhere we could reach. So the fair summary is that Porter’s Instagram connector is read-only by their own account, and Porter’s MCP server as a whole is not.
Worth knowing how often a vendor’s marketing page and its own docs disagreed on the day we looked. Windsor.ai’s Instagram page reads as insights only and mentions none of the nine write actions its docs point at. CData ships an open-source sample that says read-only and a paid server documenting inserts, updates and deletes. Comparing these tools from marketing pages alone gives the wrong answer, which is why every cell below rests on a docs page or a machine-readable tool list.
Which Instagram MCP server can actually run my automation?

What is the difference between an MCP tool and an automation?
An MCP tool runs once, when an AI calls it. An automation runs when something happens, whether or not anybody is watching. Asking an AI to post a comment is a tool call and it is finished in a second. A Comment Guard rule that hides an abusive comment at three in the morning is an automation, and nobody asked it to at three in the morning.
The distinction decides what the connector is for. An Instagram MCP server built out of API calls makes an AI a faster pair of hands: it can post for you, fetch numbers for you, tidy comments while you sit there. Which Instagram MCP server is best for reporting?
